Frequently Asked Questions

What shall I wear?
Just wear something loose and comfortable, such as jogging pants and a t-shirt. Training is barefoot, so you will not need shoes. If you have a dogi from another martial art, you are welcome to wear it with a white belt.

Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit to train Shorinji Kempo, however as classes are not specifically for children you should be above 13 years old.

Do I need to be flexible?

No there is no need to be particularly flexible or fit to start with. Training Shorinji Kempo will however, improve your flexibility and contribute to your fitness level.

Where can I buy a dogi (training cloth)?

For beginners we recommend to first buy a cheap dogi before investing into something expensive. In general any white martial art suite is fine to wear for Shorinji Kempo. One place where you can buy Filipino made dogies is at the stalls on Porvenir St., Quiapo, Manila. They offer three different kinds of dogis. Best for Shorinji Kempo is the 'cotton' model. They will also cut the lenght of arms and legs (its better a bit shorter then too long) for free. Prices are around 500 PhP.
